Smart Labour Management Systems
Advancing harvest labour management
The Fair Work Commission made a decision to change piecework rules in the Horticulture Award from 28 April 2022. This decision provides pieceworkers with a minimum wage guarantee and requires employers to ensure detailed and accurate work records are maintained for all employees on piecework agreements.
As these changes came into effect, employers determined the need to track and manage harvest worker productivity in real time, to ensure that informed management decisions could be made.
Fruit Growers Tasmania conducted a project to help producers determine labour management gaps within their business, and to explore and implement Smart Labour Management Systems to:
- help track worker productivity
- improve labour productivity
- manage record keeping to demonstrate compliance with the Horticulture Award’s new piecework provisions
This project was funded through AgriFutures Australia’s Producer Technology Uptake Program.
