The highly anticipated Tasmanian blueberry season is in full swing, with fresh, locally grown blueberries available at local stores, farmers markets and pick your own farms. Bursting with flavour and packed with health benefits, these sweet, juicy berries are the perfect addition to your summer diet.

After a slightly later start to the season this year, fruit volumes and quality are looking high. The Tasmanian blueberry season generally runs from late December through to March, with peak volumes being produced from early January through to mid February.

Tru Blu Berries in the Huon Valley have been growing blueberries for over 40 years and are one of the pioneers of the Tasmanian blueberry industry. Sharon Keetch runs the family farm with brother Damien Clark and said, “Tasmania produces some of the best tasting blueberries. Our cool temperate climate and slower growing conditions promotes excellent flavour and it’s great to be able to provide locally grown fresh berries for the Tasmanian community.”

While NSW is the major producer of blueberries nationally, Tasmania is Australia’s second largest production state. Last season Tasmanian growers grew approximately 2,200 tonnes of blueberries, contributing around 11 per cent of Australian production.

The majority of production in Tasmania is sold on the domestic market, with only a small volume sold overseas.

Blueberry plants thrive both in open field and under tunnels, however the majority of Tasmanian blueberries are produced from soil grown plantings. The rich soils, clean water and mild conditions result in Tasmania producing high quality, sweet, flavourful berries.

“The freshness and flavour of local blueberries is unmatched,” says Peter Cornish, CEO of Fruit Growers Tasmania. “By choosing Tasmanian grown blueberries, consumers are not only getting the best produce available but also helping to sustain our local farming community. It’s a win-win for everyone.

“Whether you enjoy them fresh, in your favourite recipe or a topping on morning yoghurt, summer is the perfect time to enjoy locally grown blueberries.

“So, head out and visit your local supermarket, farmers market or pick your own farm and treat yourself to some sweet, juicy, locally grown Tasmanian blueberries.”
