Summer is just around the corner and Tasmanian strawberries are starting to arrive in stores!

Local grower Dave Jennings said "Nothing beats Tasmanian strawberries. Our cooler climate and extra winter chill enhance the flavour for a sweeter fruit. Less travel time means the fruit is in stores the next day, full of freshness and in great condition."

While the start of the season is a little later than last year due to a chilly spell of weather in October, the volume and quality are still high.

Australian production of strawberries is approximately 66,000 tonnes, with Tasmania contributing around 15 percent of the total volume, that’s almost 10,000 tonnes of Tasmanian Grown strawberries!

Almost all of the production from Tasmania is sold into the domestic market, with only a small amount sold overseas.

Fruit Growers of Tasmania CEO Peter Cornish said “Strawberries grow well in Tasmania’s cool climate particularly under poly tunnels and in substrate where 90 per cent of production is grown. Dave Jennings is one of the few growers who is a master at growing in the ground.”

Dave believes Tasmania’s access to clean water and mild growing conditions contribute to a long growing season that extends through to May.

Each season Tasmania’s fruit industry employ around 10,000 people and produces over $325 million worth of fruit.

Peter added, “I would encourage Tasmanians to get out and enjoy some delicious Tasmanian grown strawberries, you just can’t beat them for taste and freshness! Especially in a glass of Tasmanian sparkling wine in Cup week!

“And don’t forget you also have our raspberries, blackberries, blueberries, and cherries to look forward to in the coming weeks and months.

“I’m a big fan of the summer season and all the wonderful fresh fruit we have here in Tasmania. We are spoilt for choice. Although it’s still early, this fruit season is shaping up to be a ripper!”
